Lessons from Jerry Maguire for Direct Sales Professionals

P1D - Jerry MaguireWe have all heard the famous one liner  “SHOW ME THE MONEY” from the movie Jerry Maguire..  In fact, last night I fell asleep on the couch after a day of earnest, fun and “easy” work in Platinum One Destinations, only to wake up at 1am with the movie Jerry Maguire underway…

Jerry Maguire is one my favorite movies.. Not just because it is a great love story, but because it so rich in the lessons of relationships, how money is made, and how we must align ourselves with our true intentions if we ever want to achieve the “Kwan” as Rod Tidwell, the football player, visualizes and wants his agent Jerry to help him achieve.

I’ve put a trailer clip from Youtube of the movie with some of the key moments in this incredibly inspiring movie right here… Then right after in this post, I pull out some the key one-liners that all of us in direct sales can either relate to or should consider in achieving our own “Kwan” (rather than the coin) and those of others - which is what we are all really deep down wanting to achieve in the end…

Great One-Liners & The Key Lessons From Jerry Maguire - For Direct Sales Professionals…

From Jerry:

  • There’s genius everywhere, but until they turn pro, it’s like popcorn in the pan. Some pop… some don’t. [the 20/80 rule in sales teams]
  • I will not rest until I have you holding a Coke, wearing your own shoe, playing a Sega game featuring you, while singing your own song in a new commercial, starring you, broadcast during the Superbowl, in a game that you are winning, and I will not sleep until that happens. I’ll give you fifteen minutes to call me back. [offering value as a sponsor/director for your team members]
  • I’m still sort of moved by your “My word is stronger than oak” thing. [people who say they are ready to get started and never do or join with someone else]
  • [to Rod] I am out here for you. You don’t know what it’s like to be ME out here for YOU. It is an up-at-dawn, pride-swallowing siege that I will never fully tell you about, ok? [what it sometimes feels like to build a team]
  • Jump right into my nightmare, the water is warm [facing adversity]
  • 24 hours ago I was hot. Now I’m a cautionary tale. See this jacket I’m wearing? You like it? Cause I don’t really need it. Cause I’m cloaked in failure. I lost the #1 pick the night before the draft. [facing adversity]
  • Rod, I’m not a rascist. I’m telling you to be the best version of you, to get back to the guy who first started playing this game. Way back when you were a kid. It wasn’t just about the money, was it?…Was it? [How it's never about the money]
  • Alright. Here’s why you don’t have your ten million dollars yet. You are a paycheck player. You play with your head. Not your heart. In your personal life? Heart. But when you get on the field — you’re a businessman. It’s wide-angle lenses and who f@!!d you over and who owes you for it. That’s not what inspires people. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth, can you handle it? Just a “question,” Rod. Between friends. [How it's never about the money]

From Rod:

  • Anyone else would have left you by now, but I’m sticking with you. And if I have to ride your ass like Zorro, you’re gonna show me the money. We are together on this! We are going to be one! [how we should be interdependent as we build teams]
  • You are hanging on by a very thin thread and I dig that about you! [never giving up]
  • Jerry Maguire. My agent. You are my ambassador of kwan! [the role of a sponsor]
  • You should be dreaming about me baby! I should be on your mind constantly and that’s how we will truly materialize the kwan! [the power of focused intention]

From Marcee:

  • You know what you’re gonna do, Rodney. You’re gonna reject this s!!$$ty contract. You’re gonna play out your existing s!!$$ty contract and go be a free agent next year and the hell with Arizona. This is us, and we determine our worth. You’re a fine, proud, surviving, splendid black man. [knowing and believing and acting in faith about who you are and what you are worth

From Dorothy:

  • "Shut up. Just shut up... You had me at hello. You had me at hello." [this is for people like me - who talk themselves out of sales sometimes!! LOL]

From Dicky Fox:

  • The key to this business is personal relationships.
  • If this [points to heart] is empty, this [hits own head] doesn’t matter.
  • I love getting up in the morning. I clap my hands and say, ‘This is gonna be a great day!
    [all great lessons on mind-set]

From Ray:

  • D’you know that bees and dogs can smell fear? (and Jerry’s response - Did you know that the career record for hits is 4,256 by Pete Rose who is NOT in the Hall of Fame?
  • D’you know that my next door neighbor has three rabbits?
[just cute quotes that remind us how our children can be our greatest teachers]

Boy, I could fill up pages and pages of golden nuggets from this movie.. My best advice? Watch the movie. It will inspire you to be the “best” you can be in your own Direct Sales career, and others you want to help achieve the “Kwan” in Platinum One Destinations

Vision Mapping Your Platinum One Destinations Business

P1DVisionMap  In our Platinum One Destinations business and in life, it is always good to have a destination in mind - your goals of where you want to go. Having a visual map then becomes essential to showing us the way.In P1D, We have a tagline that says… If it’s on a map, we’ll get you there”.   And using the Vision Mapping technique, as recommended in the movie The Secret, is the same thing.

If you have the images of your goals as already accomplished on a personal map that you look at every day - that map is going to get you there much more quicker than just simply writing your goals in words and looking at the words daily.

So, I wanted to share with my readers the training I held last Saturday, January 26, 2008 with my team and my colleagues from the Synergy Marketing Group leadership and their teams.

The training is entitled “Advanced Vision Mapping”.  I invited and collaborated with a highly sought after trainer and consultant in this area, Lore Raymond.  In this training, she provides her expert advice and wisdom from her 15 years of experience teaching this method with to up to 600 people in one session.

What is new and exciting about her training with Vision Mapping is that she is now incorporating Feng Shui into the process to provide a structure and balance for your map and to consider 9 areas of your life when constructing it.

So, here is the intro video where I discuss my own personal map and in which you can see my completed, beautiful, personal map for 2008 and learn more about me.

You can listen to the one-hour audio portion of the training by clicking on the podcast link directly below this video, or click on the Audio Trainings link on this site above.  Enjoy!!

Here is the entire one-hour audio portion of the training for your listening pleasure & learning!

Pistachio Prospecting in Coastal Synergy Group

Pistachio Prospecting Well it is Christmas Morning and my children have opened all their treasures from Santa. They are now playing, fully concentrated on building their castles and race tracks (I have 2 boys), so it seemed like a great time to take a moment and share with you a reflection I had while I was making gifts for my family for Christmas.

This year I wanted to make some gifts. I bought a book on how to create jars of various mixes, and I made 4 jars of Pistachio-Lemon Shortbread Cookie mix along with a recipe card to give out to each of my family members.

I made the mistake of buying a big bag of Pistachios that WERE NOT shelled. Each jar required a full cup and a 1/4 of shelled pistachios, among other things. So last night I sat down to begin shelling the pistachios to chop and put into the jars.

I started the process picking each pistachio carefully, using both hands to tenderly open the shells and put each shelled nut in a bowl.  I looked first for the shells that were already open. The ones I could easily pry.  One by one, I put each nut in the bowl.  Plop, Plop, they clanged as each one dropped into the empty bowl.  After about 15 minutes of this I only had about a 1/4 cup of nuts in the bowl.  I realized I had a LONG way to go and way too much to do besides sitting there shucking pistachio nuts.  Thank goodness they were the white ones and not the messy pink ones that stain your fingers.  And of course the process was taking long too because for every nut I put in the bowl, I was eating two!! Ha Ha..

So, as the process began to unfold, I noticed that I started to get into a rhythm. The nuts were going into the bowl quicker and the pile was getting bigger. I was seeing some results finally! And then I realized that if I held the shell over the bowl and pried it open, they fell right into the bowl without having to pull it out. Now we’re talkin!!

I also was coming across shells that were not open at all, and so I just passed those right by and put them in a separate pile in which I would eventually just smash with a hammer to get open.

I was reminded of how this process is much like prospecting in our business.  When we have a batch of leads we begin by simply picking up the phone and going down the list. And as we do, we begin to sort, and we build a rhythm, a natural momentum, and with each repetition of the script, with each objection we face and overcome, the next time gets easier and easier. And as we put to the side the pistachios we can’t open, we do the same with people that are not open to the possibilities of their own lives, with no attachment or emotion about it.

We can always come back to those people with a nut cracker or hammer later, but in order to effectively prospect, we simply gravitate to the ones that are easy to open and put them in “our bowl” or our “pipeline.”  When I did finally open enough shells & nuts to put into the jars, I did go back to the ones that were tough to open and took a hammer to them. But what I found was when I smashed the shells, I also smashed the nut inside, which made it impossible to put them in the jar. And that is also what it’s like when we try to convince or persuade anyone to join our business.

I am happy to say that I was successful in creating the 4 wonderful jars of Pistachio-Lemon Shortbread Cookie mixes for my family. I’m looking forward to giving them these gifts as I put my time and love and care into them, which means so much more to most people I think than a gift card from Walmart.

So the next time you sit down to prospect remember that by simply following a systematic approach, the momentum and movement will begin naturally. And don’t waste your time with the people you can’t open.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

For those of you in Coastal Vacations, you probably know that one of the biggest challenges in network marketing is how to get the news out about yourself as a leader and about the incredible benefits of the Coastal packages.  That’s why I began an Internet Marketing Coaching teleconference series, mainly for my immediate team in Coastal Vacations, but the training is open to any Coastal reps as well as anyone in the network marketing industry interested in the new Web 2.0 technology revolution.

My series began on September 10th and future recorded coaching sessions that I do will be posted on the synergy prosperity blog - available to everyone.  This program will cover the information network marketers want and need to begin to take control of their network marketing business and transition from or supplement their reliance on purchased mlm or business opportunity leads.

Here is what I covered in the first session, held on September 10, 2007:

  1. Understanding the internet marketplace & the lead capture process
  2. How to find quality, professional contacts and leads from the internet, without any cost to you
  3. How to use the Web 2.0 explosion (Youtube, MySpace) to generate Free traffic - the right way, without spamming

Currently, there are individuals charging $4,000 to learn this information through individual coaching programs. Before considering paying $4K, listen to the first in the series. This initial training is available to all network marketers desiring to learn the first steps to harnessing the power of the internet.

Future training sessions will be announced as they are rolled out. So be sure to check the synergy prosperity blog frequently for updates and announcements. Future sessions will cover the following:
